What is “glycerin soap?” “Glycerin soap” is the name soapmakers use to describe soap that is made with a soap base containing high levels of glycerin, which makes it easier to melt and pour into intricate molds. Glycerin is a great humectant, a natural byproduct of saponification, and is why soap works so well at simultaneously cleansing and moisturizing your skin. Big businesses that mass-produce soap often remove the glycerin and sell it to other manufacturers for creams and lotions, but this soap (and all the soap I make) still has all the glorious glycerin in it!
My soap labeled “glycerin soap” is made with high-quality bases that use as many organic and natural ingredients as possible. I specifically seek out soap bases that don’t have synthetic or harsh detergents. I like that glycerin soap can be used right away and doesn’t need to cure – and it also can form intricate details of complicated molds. I order artist-made molds from all over the world, including Poland, Japan, and the Czech Republic. The high glycerin content in these soaps mean that in humid climates, any glycerin soap might “sweat,” but that just shows you that it has a high glycerin content and is extremely moisturizing on your skin.
